On March 11th , two delegations that later shared an analysis situation of agricultural biomass in Catalonia and Spain visited the Vineyards4Heat project; one was integrated by the manager of the Cluster of the Biomass Of Catalonia, Marc Cortina, accompanied by the expert in energy produced by forest and agricultural biomass, Albert Casas, both met the councillor for the Environment, Josep Mª Martí, the coordinator for Strategic Projects, Jordi Cuyàs and the expert of Environment, Laura Carbó. During the meeting the delegation of Penedès insisted on the need for administrations and entities of the sector to value more the agricultural biomass, which is still considered as something secondary.
Subsequently, a delegation of the international group based in Spain, ATHISA, expert in biomass treatment for power generation, was added to the meeting, composed of its president, José Luís Alarcón, who at the same time is the vice-president of the Cluster of Innovation of Granada, and the person in charge of the Sustainable Energy division, Omar Fernández, accompanied by the Manager of Cluster of Wine of Catalonia, Clara Santamaria, with whom they analyzed the future of agricultural biomass to the whole of Europe and in our territory in particular, also accompanied by the president of Cooperativa de la Granada, Joan Pons, that this season are in charge of the collection of the vineyard pruning.
The meeting concluded that in a relatively short period of time the burning of agricultural waste in the field (which emit more than 90% of the CO2 produced by the whole process of viticulture) will be banned and will have to be reused in a process of circular economy to make energy. This is already indicated by the last communication from the Spanish State to the European Commission, where the use of vine and olive residues is mentioned for the first time. This means making an important leap in the project of the use of the pruning, to move on to a wholesale treatment and utilization, with the medium-term objective of being one more element, together with the sustainable energies of proximity or greater (plates and solar fields, windmills, …) that at the same time give continuity to system when there is little sun or little wind and nuclear power station have already been closed, as planned. The meeting took the commitment to continue with the analysis of the subject during the month of May at the plant that ATHISA has in Socuéllamos.
