Vilafranca has hosted from Tuesday 25 to Thursday 27 February the meeting of the “Promoting the penetration of agrobiomass in European rural areas” AgroBioHeat project. During these three days, the project partners have discussed about the valorization of different types of agrobiomass, together with different European countries participating where different solutions are developed to take action in the sustainable management of the different agricultural biomass types present in Europe. Vilafranca is reference at European level as a result of the European project LIFE Vineyards for Heat, which gives visibility to a circuit where the biomass from the vine pruning is treated as a resource, and not as a waste.
This Thursday, the last day of the meeting, welcomed by the Deputy Mayor Aureli Ruiz, it has been possible to explain the success story of the Vineyards for Heat LIFE project, which received the BEST LIFE award in 2018. Participants, coming from all over Europe have seen firsthand the Heat district located in the neighbourhood of La Girada, the machine for collecting vine shoots that this year has been in charge of the agricultural cooperative La Granada.
The Penedès wine region has different companies and / or cooperatives of agricultural services that, little by little, are making their path in this new way of understanding the management of biomass from vine pruning, a renewable energy resource and km0, based on the principles of circular economy.
