On Wednesday, April 27, 2022, the councilor for Strategic Projects of Vilafranca City Council, Aureli Ruiz, was present at the International Fair of Agricultural Machinery (FIMA) at the Congress Center of Zaragoza, to explain the energy use of the vineyard pruning biomass that is carried out in the Penedès thanks to the LIFE project ‘Vinyes per Calor’, which was completed 5 years ago.

Aureli Ruiz wanted to highlight the efforts of the territory and the new green economy that is growing in an embryonic way in the Penedès area, making different cooperatives, companies and administrations bet on renewable energy, treating this biomass as an energy resource and not as a waste. The Agricultural Cooperative of La Granada is currently collecting and crushing the vineyard pruning biomass through the Girada heat network and the Ricard Fortuny Health Center, which is being managed by the Municipal Water Company.

Vilafranca del Penedès City Council is currently collaborating with the Branches project, as a pioneering practice in the use of this type of biomass with the aim of disseminating well-established good practices.

The ‘Vineyards for Heat’ project is part of meeting the emission reduction targets set in the Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plan (PAESC) approved by the Municipal Plenary in 2019 and in the certification Biosphere as a sustainable destination.
