Since 2015, Covides works in the project “Vineyards4Heat”, an initiative that aims to mitigate the problems arising from climate change by means of the reduction of greenhouse gases, through the use of the remains of pruning (biomass) to generate bio energy. In this way the CO2 emissions are reduced, the energy bill gets cheaper and new working places will be generated.
Covides is one of the partners of this strategy of sustainability, together with the Catalan Wine Cluster (INNOVI) and the Cooperative Nou Verd. The initiative is coordinated by the Town Council of Vilafranca del Penedès and is developed under the umbrella of the European Life Program.
The role of Covides as part of this initiative, has been to make available to the project the vineyards of its partners through which they get the remains of pruning. The ADV of COVIDES has worked hard in the monitoring of the pruning and subsequent harvesting of the vine shoots. In the 2015-16 campaign, the remains of about 120 hectares were collected and along this 2016-17, around 80 hectares.
This project, with the aim to preserve our environment, has leaded to recently obtain the award of Sustainable City in the category of residues for the Town Hall of Vilafranca del Penedès.
