On Friday 13th January the project VINEYARDS4HEAT was presented to Spanish, Italians and Portuguese city councils, members of the Board of Directors of the European Network of Wine Cities (RECEVIN), during their stay in Vilafranca del Penedès.
The Mayor of the town, the Environment municipal councillor and the Project Coordinator have presented to the municipal responsible of major wine regions of Europe, such as Prosecco Superiore, la Mancha, Rías Baixas, Montilla, Douro, do Tejo, Palmela and Alentejo, among others, how is running this project that uses what’s generally considered a waste in an energy resource, reducing CO2 and promoting the circular economy in the wine sector, in addition to the use of vine shoots as a source of energy for facilities.
During the explanation it was made special emphasis on the most innovative factors such as the management of the system through a municipal services company (which also sells water) and the machinery of pre-pruning, among others. It also stressed the strategic importance to produce decentralized energy and to take democratic control over their management, while helping to achieve the objectives of the E.U. in this field.
